1 - plummer vinson syndrome

(Henry Stanley Plummer, 1874 - 1936, American physician and Porter Paisley Vinson, 1890 - 1959, American surgeon),

syndrome including dysphagia, hypochromic anaemia, glossitis, in association with a web-like membrane in the cervical oesophagus at the level of the pharyngooesophageal segment.

splenomegaly is seen in a few patients .

The membrane is usually located in the anterior wall but may be circular or multiple.

The anaemia can be treated with iron but this does not affect the membrane.

Endoscopic balloon dilatation or cricopharyngeal myotomy may be considered in these patients.
